Cardiff and Vale College — Brand Creation

In August 2011 Barry College and Coleg Glan Hafren, two established and successful Further Education (FE) colleges merged to create Cardiff and Vale College, one of the largest and most exciting new colleges in Wales.

The merger is part of an innovative vision, set out by the Welsh Government, to transform post-16 education and training in the Capital Region of Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

As this was a flagship project funded by the Welsh government, the College had to maintain a very visible protocol throughout the development of the logo. This involved consultation with all stakeholder groups to reach an appropriate conclusion.

We developed a long list of branding solutions, which we posted to a microsite. All stakeholders were then asked to vote on their three favourite options (they were also allowed to post comments). From this we worked up a shortlist of three options, which were taken forward to the next round.
Again we asked stakeholders to vote on their preferred option. This was then presented to the board of governors for final approval.

Once the logo had been agreed upon, we created extensive brand guidelines, which covered all aspects of the logo usage. We also produced a short form version, which could be used by other external agencies and printers.

For the outward facing launch of the college, we developed an innovative brochure, a newsletter which was distributed throughout the community and a website, which acted as a stopgap until the main site could be developed.

Results
The brand was rolled out across all sites and very well received amongst all stakeholders.
